Frequestly Asked Questions:
It comes down to age. Ages 4–5 play in Lil’ Kickers Soccer League (LKSL); ages 5–8 play in Skills Institute Soccer League (SISL). Age 5 can go either way — LKSL is the gentler entry point, and SISL is a step up in pace — so if your child is brand-new or the youngest of their friends, start with LKSL; if they’ve got a little game already, SISL fits. Not sure? The coaches at your local location are happy to help you choose.
Every team is led by a certified Lil’ Kickers or Skills Institute coach — never a parent volunteer. They’re professionally trained to keep kids engaged, build confidence, and bring out the best in young players. If your child already takes Lil’ Kickers or Skills Institute classes, they’ll often have the same coaches on their league team. It’s the clearest difference between our leagues and most alternatives.
No experience needed — first-timers are exactly who these leagues are built for. Whether your child has never touched a ball or has played before, certified coaches meet them right where they are. The small-sided games and no-pressure setup are designed to make a first team experience fun and confidence-building, not overwhelming.
That’s completely normal at this age, and our coaches are trained for it. They meet kids where they are, keep things playful and low-pressure, and let a hesitant child warm up at their own pace — no child is ever forced onto the field. The whole environment is built to turn nervous first-timers into kids who can’t wait for game day.
Just one game a week, on the same day at your local facility — a single 50-minute block from warm-up to final cheer. There’s no separate practice night to add to your week; the coaching happens right inside the game. Seasons run about 10 weeks, so it’s an easy, predictable commitment to plan around.
Safety is built into the rules. There is no heading and no slide tackling at any age — heading isn’t allowed for young players, period. Every free kick is indirect (so there are no hard penalty-kick moments), and in games without a goalkeeper, a protected “No Zone” in front of the net keeps players from crowding the goal. And if a child ever takes a knock to the head, they’re done playing for the day, and we tell you right away — head safety is never a judgment call at these ages.
Just a Lil’ Kickers or Skills Institute jersey and a pair of shin guards — we provide everything else (balls, goals, and all the equipment). If your child doesn’t have a jersey yet, many locations have them available to purchase, and kids also receive one when they enroll in Lil’ Kickers or Skills Institute classes.
Use the “Find a League Near You” button to locate the Lil’ Kickers facility nearest you, then register for LKSL or SISL right from that location’s page. If you’re not sure which league fits your child, the coaches at your local location are happy to help you choose.
